Do I need a permit to develop a basement in Calgary?
In most cases, yes. Basement developments may require building and trade permits depending on the scope of work. Additional requirements can apply when adding bedrooms, bathrooms, structural changes or other features. Enteco can coordinate the required permit process as part of your project.
How long does a basement development take?
A typical basement development takes approximately 6–10 weeks once construction begins, depending on the size and complexity of the project, permit and inspection requirements, trade scheduling, and selected finishes. We provide a project schedule before construction begins and keep you updated throughout the work.
Can my basement become a legal rental suite?
Potentially. A legal secondary suite must meet City of Calgary requirements for items such as fire separation, safe exiting, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, heating and ventilation, and other applicable building-code requirements. We can assess your existing basement and help determine what would be required before you commit to the project. See Legal Basement Suites →
What's included in a basement development?
Depending on your project, a complete basement development can include framing, insulation, electrical, plumbing and HVAC work, drywall, painting, flooring, doors and trim, as well as bathrooms, wet bars and other finished spaces.
Do you finish walkout basements differently from standard basements?
The core construction process is similar, but walkout basements often require additional planning around exterior doors, windows, natural light, insulation and the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. We incorporate these elements into the overall layout and finishing plan.
